Go And Sin... No More

Description

John 8:4-5, 7-8, 10-11
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

I've encountered a particular question, on occasion, by various venues. In one form or another, the question essentially is as follows: "Why would Jesus make the statement 'go and sin no more' considering it is impossible to live without sin?" Without fail, the response is forthright, but expresses a notion that what Jesus meant was simply "close-ish" to what he said, and almost always included the words "context" and "lifestyle." I find this strange to say the least. We all mean what we say. Why wouldn't God? So I submit a few thoughts.

  1. Jesus absolutely meant what he actually said. He always does. (This is a God who used His words to make the entirety of creation.)
  2. Where does one get the notion that man is eternally bound to sin, because it's not the Bible? The Bible articulates an idea that is diametrically opposed to that.
  3. Jesus excels at the impossible, or at least what man considers impossible. He made a point to say so [unless one thinks he meant something different when he said that too].

The thing about sin, along with what the bible says is good or bad; it's a load of rubbish.

I'm not saying things like"literally eat the rich, anarchy reigns, I'mma have rape for dinner!", not in the slightest. I can mention all the contradictions in the bible (Exodus 20 has "don't kill" before Numbers says "kill all these guys, but keep the virgins") are at best... contradictions, and a setup for a tyranical rule at worst.

But the main issue I have is this; they're too simple. Take the 10 commandments; I can't kill if it was in self defence, or I still get punished if it was an accident? If my friend was suicidal and had a gun, I shouldn't steal the gun so he can't blow his brains out? I can't lie as part of a buildup to a surprise party or protect someone by misleading those that'd do them harm?

If god was as good as people claim, he would have a straight forward system in place, rather than vague declorations that should include not owning people!
