Anoche's Principium

Description

a play off mathematical theorems/postulates, i.e. Pythagorean Theorem

anoché (Greek):
tolerance

principium:
a fundamental principle

It is seemingly impossible to find a clear, concise, unambiguous definition to the word "tolerance" in its modern use. Paragraphs, pages, and even criteria and circumstance must be given to try and meet this task.
Unfortunately, though not surprisingly, this is due to the sheer perversion of the word and its use. Tolerance has always carried the connotation of forbearance or the enduring of one thing or another, with the implications of that thing being some amount of evil, harm, error, or inferiority. (Flaws can be tolerated. There are levels of tolerance mechanically where errors or variance is acceptable though it doesn't meet the exact specification. The human body shows tolerance to adverse conditions. Etc.)
This word would begin to be a applied to viewpoints, but in a culture of political correctness and relativism, surely one cannot express views as superior/inferior to another and the notion of calling one's views evil is an evil thing in itself. So tolerance has come to imply a permissiveness and even respect for other's views, and those who support this, view it quite obviously as a good thing.
The problem is that certain viewpoints inherently leave no place for the validity of another, and they are normally those that are fundamental to the core of an individual. We call this truth. Views we are certain of. Whatever is contrary to these certainties are considered lies.
The notion of giving consideration, validation and/or respect to a known lie would be considered an absurd request by most. But offence is the gravest of infractions, so personal, fundamental beliefs and truths, have been reduced to the significance of opinions, and this is the "principium" of tolerance. This is the foundation of legitimizing a "tolerant" worldview. Truth is relative and subjective. Really, no more than a strong assumption. In this world, why can't 2+2=5?

Whew I really like your analysis though it is a mind bender.  At first I thought you were speaking about tolerance from an engineering perspective or (2.4 + 2.4 = 4.8 which rounds to 5) or stated 2+2=5 for large values of 2 which is a classic joke.  Then I realized you were also talking about tolerant worldviews.  Really like the discussion and I agree that sometimes the loving thing to do is to tell someone they are wrong.
